IN-STORE ONLY: Our Fall Denim Event

If there’s a more quintessentially American wardrobe than jeans and tee shirts, we haven’t found it. And, to be honest, we don’t think we ever will. Jeans and tee shirts go together like stars and stripes. In honor of that, as of right now through the 16th of September, if you buy any pair of jeans in the store, you’ll get a free tee shirt from Alternative Apparel or Alchemy Design to go with it.

Once again, this promotion is valid only in the store at 1423 South Congress Avenue.

In-Store and Online: New Arrivals From Barque

There’s a time-tested style axiom that goes like this: “look good, feel good.” The folks over at Barque  have created an entire design ethos by inverting that rule. Keeping a global lifestyle in mind, they make their products to the highest standards of comfort while sacrificing absolutely nothing in the way of style and construction. We just got a shipment from their fall collection in at 1423 South Congress Ave and online.

Meanwhile, On the Internet …

This is a compendium of the things we were paying attention to on the internet when we weren’t wondering when a guy who raised over 325 million dollars for cancer research and never failed a drug test was going to catch a break. (Spoiler alert: he can’t seem to.)

+ Above, watch Sleigh Bells make Avocado margaritas (Avococktails?) with Anthony Bourdain somewhere in Austin.

+ One day, our desire to win the lottery will overcome the mental block we have against actually remembering to ever buy lottery tickets, and when that happens, we will win it. If that day ever comes, this will be our car. (Or, you know, one of our cars.)

+ “Besides Hoosiers, it’s the best basketball movie ever made.” From an Oral History of White Men Can’t Jump.

+ This is a roundup of Vietnam-era engraved Zippo lighters.

+ A Famous Night is a collection of gig posters for concerts that never happened. We’re thinking of learning Illustrator just so we can produce promotional materials for the Guns N Roses classic lineup reunion show that’s always just on the verge of happening in our hearts and minds.

+ Pitchfork’s Cover Story on Cat Power is extremely worthwhile reading.

How to Win at Breakfast

Before we start, we should note that we saw a picture of this breakfast somewhere on the internet, but then promptly forgot where, so we’ve reconstructed this dish from our memory of an image we saw for a minute. Our apologies to whomever came up with it first. — ed.

When you want Fall to go ahead and get here already, we recommend preparing and eating hardy fall-style breakfasts like this one. At press time, it’s 10:00 AM on Saturday. There is still time to make this.

Necessary materials:

1 Record player, or some other means by which to play music in your home

1 copy of Sweet Heart, Sweet Light, the album by Spiritualized

1 cup steel cut rolled oats

1 dash salt

1 handful raisins

1 banana

1 stick of butter

1 bar dark chocolate

Directions:

1. Put on side “C” of Sweet Heart, Sweet Light so that you start with “Freedom.”

2. Go to the kitchen and make oatmeal. (You know. Bring a cup of oats mixed with 3 cups of water and a little salt to a boil and then let it simmer for like 35-45 minutes.)

3. While that’s happening, make coffee. This way you have something to do while the oatmeal’s simmering. And you get some coffee out of the deal.

4-7. When the oatmeal’s ready, cut like half a banana into each bowl. Throw some raisins in there. A half tablespoon of butter. In the far corner, away from the rest of the additions, put no more than two little squares — really just one — of dark chocolate in the bowl.

8. You win. Enjoy.

Happy Birthday, Joe Strummer

Joe Strummer would have been 60 years old today. Rare is the musician who makes music as powerfully at the end of his career as he did at the beginning of it.
