Three excellent books just showed up in our bookstore, check ‘em out:

Dian Hanson’s new collection just showed up: three volumes encompassing the history of pin-up magazines.

Things get a little NSFW after the jump, but if you’ve made it this far reading about pin-ups at work, then what the hell, right?

In Store and Online: Russian Criminal Tattoos

The best tattoos are both meaningful and earned. The tattoos collected in the Russian Criminal Tattoo volumes below are certainly meaningful, and if you had one, you earned it the hard way. They’re amazing to see, and serve as a reminder that you wouldn’t want to do or go through what the people who wore them did to do so.

Side note: these books were compiled by a man named Danzig Baldaev, which might be the most badassed name an author has ever had.

We just got a couple of great new items in the shop and in the “Bookstore” section of the web store.

First up, a collection of images from Edward S. Curtis:

Edward Sheriff Curtis was the preeminent photographer of Native American life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

We don’t carry many magazines, but we carry Man of the World. The new magazine contains articles by such writers as A Continuous Lean’s Michael Williams, profiles on artists like Aaron Young, and styling by guys like Michael Bastian. It’s got a profile on Giovanni Ribisi written by Giovanni Reda. That’s two Giovannis for the price of one!

In-Store and Online: New Books

We’ve got a couple of great new books in-store and online in The Edible Selby and Vintage Menswear: A Collection From The Vintage Showroom.

Todd Selby’s last book was all about exploring the homes of his friends – people who happened to also be creative luminaries and powerhouses. This time around, he’s ventured into the kitchens of the most creative people in the culinary arts. The results are, as you might imagine, amazing.

Vintage Menswear features a selection of goods from The Vintage Showroom in England. The best introduction to this book is here, in video form, featuring the authors themselves. Suffice to say, though, the pieces collected within these pages are some of the most interesting we’ve ever seen.

In the Store and Online: The Rolling Stones 1972

In 1972, Life Magazine assigned legendary photographer Jim Marshall to cover the Rolling Stones during the recording sessions and subsequent tour surrounding Exile On Main Street. According to Keith Richards’ foreword to the resulting book of photographs, once Marshall arrived on the scene “he was another Stone.” If we had a time machine, or were using one of three wishes, or could otherwise do anything we wanted regardless of the limitations of time and space, being part of the Exile-era Rolling Stones would be pretty high on the list. While we struggle to come to terms with the impossibility of this, we at least have the photographs that Jim Marshall left behind to pore over. The book is available online and in the store at 1423 South Congress Ave.

In-Store and Online: The Great American Pin-Up

American pin-up girls: the girl-next-door models for thousands of paintings that became omnipresent between the late ’30s and the 1950s. We’re proud to now carry one of the first comprehensive studies of the genre to appear in print: Taschen’s newest, The Great American Pin-Up. It features hundreds of iconic images – as much pieces of art as they are relics of a time of innocence and Americana. All the images are compiled from Louis Meisel Gallery in NYC which houses the largest collection of pin-ups in the country. Read more about it here.
