New Arrivals: Gola

by robertl on February 14th, 2012 - No Comments »

You know what your  Valentine really wants? For you to have on good shoes. Luckily, STAG’s favorite sneaker for the spring and summer has arrived once again, now in more colorways than ever before. This will make your Valentine happy. (Wait. This is not true. At all. What they want is flowers and chocolates and fancy dinners and otherwise thoughtful gifts. And you should provide them with that. But while you’re doing all that, you may want to stop in to 1423 South Congress Ave and check out these new Golas in person. They’re really good.)

The Artwork of Brian Salvi

by robertl on February 13th, 2012 - No Comments »

For a while now, we at STAG have been proud to feature the paintings of Texas artist Brian Salvi on the walls here at 1423 South Congress Avenue. His beautiful large-scale portraits feature figures from American History, be they Native Americans (like Pedro Pino of the Zuni People, above), presidents, or generals. We love them. It’s a rare thing to find an artist who consistently produces paintings this bold and iconic and who still progresses within his chosen theme. It is an honor for us to witness that progression.

Meanwhile, On the Internet …

by robertl on February 12th, 2012 - No Comments »

An ongoing compendium of the things on the internet we’ve been paying attention to lately.

+ Do you have about fifty minutes to kill? Sure you do. It’s Sunday. Might as well enjoy the above footage from the record release party for the Beastie Boys’ masterpiece Paul’s Boutique.

+ The workspace of artist James Victore, courtesy of From the Desk Of.

+ We’re not going to lie to you. We’ve spent a great deal of time this week rooting for Paul, the executive chef at one of our favorite restaurants on Top Chef Texas.

+ Speaking of television shows, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock made an appearance on Portlandia.

+ Collecting Candy put up a history of Big League Chew, which, in the interest of full disclosure, we should tell you that we sell at STAG.

We just got a shipment of new shirts from RRL in at 1423 South Congress Ave. They all serve as further proof that, as Mr. Williams at A Continuous Lean once said, “no one does it better.”

We can’t sell them online, so if you can’t stop by to check them out, feel free to give us a call at (512) 373-7824.

Alternative Apparel and the Art of Subtle Fanhood

by robertl on February 9th, 2012 - No Comments »

It’s over. The New York Football Giants are champions again. The jerseys and face paint and football shaped telephones are packed away in the back of a closet somewhere. Sundays are once again relegated to whatever the hell you’re supposed to do on Sundays when there’s no football on.

The true NFL fan never stops rooting for his team. The tasteful NFL fan will find comfort in these new shirts from Alternative Apparel. Not just because they’re extremely comfortable. They are. But they also keep you aligned with your team throughout the offseason without throwing it in everybody’s face. People will just think you’re wearing a great t-shirt. And you will be. You’ll wish you had had them all season.

New Arrivals: Men’s File #6

by robertl on February 7th, 2012 - No Comments »

The sixth installment of Men’s File magazine has arrived here at 1423 South Congress Ave. Men’s File is great at providing not only a modern take on vintage style, but also a vintage take on modern style. It’s a hard balance to strike, but Men’s File does it every time. Issue number six features interviews with George Barris, Hitoshi Tsujimoto of The Real McCoy’s, coverage of bodyboarding championships and tweed runs and speed trials. It’s every bit as awesome as it sounds.

Stag’s Guide to Superbowl XLVI

by robertl on February 5th, 2012 - No Comments »

Today, of course, is Super Bowl Sunday.

It’s a rare matchup between two teams impossible to bet against, especially when they’re playing each other. Our best guess: a game eerily reminiscent of 2007, all coming down to a spectacular last-minute play from one side or the other. It has all the makings of high-stakes heartbreak.

If we were a gambling website, and not just a website staffed by folks who occasionally gamble, proposition-style, amongst ourselves, we’d tell you that the last time we checked, Vegas has New England by two-and-a-half points, which is as close to “pick ‘em” as they’re willing to be. (They were wrong about Tebow all year, and this whole season has flown in the face of conventional wisdom almost as a matter of course.)

Our best advice to is to have purchased ahead of time all the beers you and your buddies care to drink and enough buffalo wings to turn your shirts orange and to sit back and simply absorb four hours of a stunted shootout punctuated by fourteen million dollars worth of commercials at every TV time out, culminating in Matthew Broderick’s middle-aged reprisal of the Ferris Bueller role, which is another thing we just don’t know how we feel about.

Meanwhile, On the Internet …

An ongoing compendium of the things on the internet we’ve been paying attention to lately.

+ Today, obviously, is about football. But this week has been about watching a nonstop loop of Blake Griffin’s dunk over Kendrick Perkins. We’re having a tough time deciding — as Thunder fans, even — whether Perkins was merely “posterized,” or if he wasn’t in fact “Ehlo-ized.”

+ The Wall Street Journal put up a fascinating article on craftsmanship in Japan.

+ Eric Cahan took a mesmerizing set of photographs of sunrises and sunsets all across the world. (via the fox is black.)

+ Donovan Strain, over at a blog called Murk Avenue, has pinpointed the exact day that was so famously good to Ice Cube.

+ Finally, this week saw the loss of a couple of legends in Don Cornelius and Angelo Dundee. RIP.

New Arrivals: How To Be a Man

by robertl on February 3rd, 2012 - No Comments »

“Style is the opposite of fashion. The Oxford English Dictionary defines fashion as ‘conventional usage in dress, mode of life, etc., especially as observed in the upper circles of society; conformity to this.’Fashion is imitative. It’s about belonging, being in with the crowd. Style is what sets a man apart from the crowd or attracts a crowd. Real style comes from within; it’s the visible component of your character and personality that you place in the world outside you.”

That’s what Glenn O’Brien says, and he writes professionally as The Style Guy, so he ought to know.

We’ve just received his remarkable book here at 1423 South Congress Avenue, and we highly recommend it. Either the author spent a long enough time being the coolest man in the world that it’s afforded him a certain fearlessness, or it’s the other way around. However it happened, it’s refreshing to read a writer who’s as unafraid to be misunderstood as he is. We don’t always agree with O’Brien, but we always appreciate his point of view.

New Arrivals: Bottle Openers

by robertl on February 2nd, 2012 - No Comments »

We just got these new bottle openers in at the store. They’re easily the best pistols we’ve ever used to open beer bottles with.
